Gypsies And Violins
April 24, 2008
Things have been a bit busy the last week, and I'm about to disappear to Scotland for a handful of days-- but when I return! There will be a lovely music-making-midi-machine at my side, which is very exciting. I will also be getting my top hat, and my Camden leather jacket, and my travelling hula hoop. All of which are really good things.Things that are cool this week: Mark Bobb sent me a version of Violently Back with his wonderful violin-playing threaded in, which made me ridiculously happy.

Also, last night, I saw a gig with the lovely gypsy creature that is Noemie Ducimetiere, whom I met singing on a bridge in London a handful of months ago. She was the one singing, but somehow we ended up doing a duet of Cry Me A River to a crowd of strangers. I'm madly in love with her voice, and she is just more evidence that music in London is full of Good Things.

Why I Love Bees
April 17, 2008
I'm out of the closet as the creature who likes snogging men. (Which may also explain why I really, really like bees-- according to Sharon and her oracular powers of bee divination, I'm going to be busting out all over with honey this summer. Hot.)I'm also now an official Londoner, with a London address, and a view out of my window that looks suspiciously like a scene out of Mary Poppins. I've even seen vans for chimney sweeps parked out in the street-- they actually exist. (You British people may laugh and say of course they exist, but growing up in Florida chimney sweeps are imaginary creatures that only happen in Disney films.)
The only slightly sad thing is that I am currently without a midi keyboard for another two weeks, so there's a possible embargo on song-making. Maybe. Possibly. I do have a castanet shaped like a ladybug, and a keychain harmonica, so I may just have to get really, really creative with my use of instruments.
Until then, you can download all the current songs over in the music things section. And! I've started bookmarking a bunch of interesting where-music-is-going sites over at del.icio.us.
And now, I am hungry, so I am going to go eat toast.

The Moment Electric And Other Stories
April 8, 2008
So it's not quite putting one up every week (more like putting up every "so" of the week or so) but finally, finally, it's here.I'm currently separated from my midi keyboard so I've been relying on the wonderful Shipwreck to provide me with beats and sonic awesome. The results of which, are here:

I wrote this song about eight months ago-- you know those times when your life splits apart? It's a demarcation line: you know that all things before this moment and all things after this moment will be different animals. A decision you've made. Something that happened. It alters the course, and often irrevocably.
This is a song about that moment, when you know that the world has shifted.
(Note: If you've never taken a road trip across a vast country, say, America, by your lonesome, and slept in a car in a freezing midnight place by the side of the road, not knowing if you're driving to something or away from something with your nerves in a perpetual blur.. well, you just haven't lived. Better than ice cream.)
Also, I have a couple of older versions of this song that I thought I'd put up here, for your amusement/perusal/thingy. I'm trying to make more mistakes in public, so here are my drafts for all the naked world to see.

* * *
I'm still in London, and I'm still drinking tea. Lots and lots of it. These Brits, they are fans of their tea. Things that I've noticed: London is infinitely cooler than Los Angeles. So far I've seen Radiohead, chickened out of David Tennant signing my decolletage, seen Tibetan freedom protestors make a run for the Olympic torch-- things are always happening here. And this is just since last Thursday. (Also: there seem to be no Goblin Children here. Definite bonus.)
